addiction treatment

There is quite a large number of types of addiction treatment within our contemporary society.  As addiction has continued to be a problem throughout the years, further types of treatment were developed to try and provide better success rates to those who were struggling.  The reality is that there is no one size fits all form of addiction treatment, as it is a condition that is unique to each person.  And each person has issues and difficulties that are particular to them that must be addressed as part of treatment.  But, two general categories of addiction treatment that individuals can choose are secular and faith-based recovery.

Faith-based recovery has been around for centuries.  In fact, one of the earliest implementations of faith-based treatment on record was in 1784.  Since then, there have been countless forms of treatment that have implemented or been based around various religions.  For instance, one of the most well-known and oldest forms of treatment is faith based, that being 12 Step.  12 Step was originally created in the late 1930’s, and was essentially the authority on addiction treatment for quite some time.  Though, there have been many other forms of treatment that have been developed since then.

The Benefits of Faith-Based Rehab Centers

There can be many benefits to using faith-based rehab centers to treat addiction.  For those who have a certain faith, it can be quite beneficial for it to be part of their addiction treatment.  Religion can provide support that they can use and reach to for power and encouragement in their lives.  Many attribute their success in overcoming addiction to their faith.  Plus, those within the same religion often have an affinity for each other, which helps to create a great recovery dynamic within the center.

The Benefits of Secular Recovery Programs

Of course, faith-based rehab is not for everyone, and there can be several reasons for this.  First off, there are those who do not resonate with any particular faith and receiving treatment that they do not agree with may not have very good results. It could cause them to not participate or cooperate fully with the treatment, which would obviously minimize the benefits of it.  But, there are many secular recovery programs that can produce great results.  There are several different therapies that have shown to be extremely successful in treating addiction but are not connected to any sort of faith, one of such being Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).  Though, there have also been faith-based programs that have found ways to implement faith within these types of therapies as well.  There are many who would rather attend treatment that focuses on self-empowerment and reliance, rather than faith.

At the end of the day, it highly depends on what is personally best for the individual.  There are those who choose to attend a faith-based rehab even if not believing at first, and some have found success with this.  But, it is typically ideal that a person attends a program that better aligns with their beliefs, and that they agree with, as this tends to often produce the best results.
